I clicked enter before I could think it through

Yesterday was my first 14 mile training "run" for my first full marathon and what did I do?  I came home and signed up for the Goofy Race & a Half challenge.  What am I thinking?

Dear Laurie,
Congratulations! You are now registered for 2013 Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge. Please check the event's official website for updates:http://www.runDisney.com
This is for the 2013 Goofy?s Race and a Half Challenge on Saturday, January 12, 2013 and Sunday, January 13, 2013.

Things that are terrifying me about signing up for this challenge?  I haven't completed my first full yet.  No idea if the 26.2 race will be a distance I love or not.  Injury.  What happens if I get hurt?  As long as it is before November 1, I can defer to 2014.  Will I want to?  No, but I'd listen to injury and defer.  I have a lot of friends going who are more experienced then I am with these races so hopefully I'll learn from them and be smart about the half and go into the full feeling good.  I've got to be able to finish in 16 minutes or less........I can do that, right?

Yup, nacho cheese is NOT a food group.
To celebrate my 14 miles, we hopped in the car and headed up to visit my mother-in-law and of course that includes a stop at Jib Jab Hot Dog Shoppe in Warren for some amazing treats. Totally bad for me but absolutely yummy.  They don't have anywhere that has this taste in Columbus.  If you're ever in Northeast Ohio, you have to head to Jib Jab and give them a try. I mean, afterall, its cheap, tasty and good food.
I usually only have 2 but 3 was the magic number yesterday! Mmmmm good.
Who doesn't love cheesy hot dog mascots?

Wait.  Hold the presses.  If I train for marathons and this Goofy challenge I can have these kinds of treats more often?  And the Katie's Korner Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream was the best finish to a fine trip to Niles.

A little black magic marker would take the gray away.

Even with the heat & humidity we had yesterday, the 14 miles didn't seem so bad at all.  I worked on nutrition bringing along Sharkie Electrolyte chews.  If you've not tried them, you should.  They are much smaller then other Electrolyte chews I've tried and shaped like sharks!  Alternating between GU (chocolate outrage, Vanilla & peanut butter were my 3 yesterday) and the Sharkies was a bit difficult and I barely touched my Gatorade bottle since it wasn't really needed but it was good to have it with me.  This week, another racewalker I know from the New Albany group joined us for our LSD and showed the group what I really
should be doing with my form!  He got me excited for the clinic next week and I can hardly wait to go!  The course that MIT set up for yesterday also gave us a chance to view the upcoming Emerald City Half course which was nice!  It should be very enjoyable.  I am looking forward to pacing the nice, relaxing 15/mile pace I'll be leading there.

Time to start putting the plans together for Goofy!  I know that it'll take quite a bit of training & I am up for it!  I need to put the plans together.  And oh, yeah, learn how to not "race" every race I sign up for!

Thankfully, the dogs are feeling better.  Annie even wanted to be silly and wear her collar on her head.  They are happily being spoiled by their Grandma who keeps threatening to steal Annie away from us.  Not sure I could live without this face.

Have you done the Goofy challenge before? Any advice you'd share?

  3. I would LOVE to join you all in 2013, sadly the budget says otherwise. From what I've heard about Goofy, many people don't race them and just have fun at Disney (I could be wrong, though!) I'd love to hear more about the Sharkies---I use Honey Stinger Chews and Nuun for my long run fueling. Yay for registering, I can't wait to follow your training!!

  7. Mmm...Jib Jab - it's been a long time! I'll be back that way this weekend, I may have to stop (on second thought now that I have to eat gluten-free, there probably isn't much that I can be sure I can have...) :(
